Yuriana Hidalgo Introduction to Literature Prof. Paula Cameron October 14th, 2014 Obedience to Authority Obedience and authority are seen as a priority in the playsâ⬠Antigone, A Dollââ¬â¢s House, and Triflesâ⬠. In the three plays women disobey men authority following their beliefs. In each play men enforce their authority over women; women are treated as if they were less than men. Antigone a woman with strong beliefs and morals revels against her uncle Creon. In A Dollââ¬â¢s House Nora was treated as pet by her husband Helmer until she opens her eyes. He always refers to her with nicknames as ââ¬Å"little sky-lark, little squirrel, little singing bird, little sweet toothâ⬠(148-149). He compares Nora with defenseless animals and tiny things. King Creon is cruel, blind and full of pride; he likes to impose his authority even if his not right. King Creon only cares about demonstrating his authority; everyone in his kingdom should know that only his word should be obeyed. He is the King and everyone in his kingdom must follow his rules. In ââ¬Å"A Dollââ¬â¢s Houseâ⬠play people can see how authority can destroy a happy marriage. This play is about a husband (Helmer) who imposes his authority over his wife (Nora). At the beginning of the play this couple seems to be a perfect couple, a lovely and caring husband and lovely, loyal and caring wife and mother, but inside their customs is just an unhappy couple. Nora doesnââ¬â¢t have her owns opinion or thoughts she must leave behind her husband decisions and beliefs. Everything begins to fail when she decides to do something without her husband knowing, Helmer get sick and Nora trying to save his life borrows money from Krogstad. When everything comes out to light, Nora meets the real Helmer the one whoââ¬â¢s cruel, deaf, and insensitive. Helmer hates to borrow money his beliefs doesnââ¬â¢t permit to depend on someone else money. He was raised with other beliefs and moral, a good man is supposed to take care of his family, not the family taking care of him.
